Looking Forward to Boston Fashion Week 2014

Once Labor Day has passed and temperatures take that shocking drop it only means one thing, Fashion Week’s around the world.

This year Boston Fashion Week will take place October 5th through the 11th and will be dedicated to the late Marilyn Riseman, a fashion legend in our city. The Boston Fashion Week organization is inviting this year's designers/event producers to keep one front row seat open as a tribute to Marilyn Riseman's lifetime commitment to the art of fashion and her tireless support of our creative community.

The School of Fashion Design will be creating an installation called "Marilyn & Me" in the lobby of their Newbury Street location. It will be unveiled during Boston Fashion Week in honor of Marilyn Riseman, and be on display throughout the month of October.

Getting your photo taken with the local fashion icon was a rite of passage for many. Anyone fortunate enough to have shared a moment and taken a photo with Marilyn is invited to share it with the School of Fashion Design. The project, equal parts heart, history, and haute couture is meant to represent the many lives Marilyn Riseman has touched in our community. You are able to email photos to Please be sure to include your full name, email address, and any message you'd like to share.

I will be listing the full and official schedule in next week’s Socially Scene column; you can also access what is currently in place at For now here are a few highlights; currently at the Museum of Fine Arts through March 8th 2015 is, “Hollywood Glamour: Fashion and Jewelry from the Silver Screen”.

“Hollywood Glamour: Fashion and Jewelry from the Silver Screen” presents designer gowns and exquisite jewelry from the 1930s and ‘40s—the most glamorous years of Hollywood film. The exhibition focuses on the iconic style of sultry starlets of the period, including Gloria Swanson, Anna May Wong, Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Mae West, and Joan Crawford.

Hollywood style in this era was a blend of on- and off-screen fashion and accessories, including dramatic costumes created for the screen by famous designers such as Adrian, Travis Banton, and Chanel and dazzling jewelry from makers of the era like Trabert & Hoeffer-Mauboussin and Paul Flato.

Along with eye-catching gowns once worn by famous figures and the sparkling jewels that contributed to their allure from the MFA and private collections, photography by Edward Steichen along with period photographs, film stills, and film clips capture the style of the silver screen era. Enjoy a glimpse of Hollywood in the Golden Age of glamour.
