FGI Boston Set Up Camp for the Annual MET Gala
Fashion can make a statement, create a trend, guide a lost soul into their destiny or just be a damn good time. The most recognized night in the industry is the annual MET Gala when celebrities from all over the globe stroll into New York City in their finest expressions. This year the Fashion Group International of Boston chapter held their first ever viewing party at The Ghost Walks in the cities Leather District.
The event is often referred to as the MET Gala, it's officially the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute benefit. Each year, there's a theme — this year, the exhibition is "Camp: Notes on Fashion," taken from Susan Sontag's essay "Notes on Camp." The theme for the 2019 gala gave guests an over the top opportunity to demonstrate their style.
Host of the local evening was Master of Ceremonies and avid fashion icon Gustavo Leon. As ticket holders arrived in their desired costumes, they were greeted by FGI Boston Board Members with refreshments and hors d’oeuvres.
The cocktails and conversation came to a cease when MC Leon grabbed the mic and began to bring full attention to the big screen televising the red-carpet arrivals. Hosts at the live event were; Anna Wintour, Alessandro Michele, creative director of Gucci, Harry Styles, entertainer, Lady Gaga and Serena Williams. Guests gathered around to gossip and gaze at looks ranging from; Kim Kardashian West’s shocking silk organza and crystal Thierry Mular gown that had viewers around the world wondering if she had work done beyond being sewn into the dress. The always stunning Katie Perry showed up lit in a 40-pound chandelier by Moschino Designer Jeremy Scott and the lighter side with seeing the love and bashful smiles from Jennifer Lopez and soon to be hubby Alex Rodriquez.
As garb continued to glide down the red-carpet Leon introduced Stylist of the evening Taylor Greeley and model Cassidy Benson from Maggie Inc Agency. Greeley was given the opportunity to showcase her skills and create “camp”. Some might ask, well what is camp? Camp is the embodiment of exaggeration and drama mixed with fashion — it's intentional and it's meant to turn heads. The art of being headass while also being haute couture. In past years of the Met Gala there have absolutely been on trend outfits with the theme; Rihanna dressed up as the pope, Sarah Jessica Parker with that strange nativity scene on her head basically anything Gaga wears is considered “camp”. At the viewing party model Benson was wore multiple looks one being by Lory Sun Artistry’s headpiece and corset (pictured below) with makeup and hair by Paula Roderick Voisembert.
When the red carpet rolled up, and gala doors closed in NYC the party in Boston began. FGI Regional Director Kathy Benharris took a minute to thank guests for attending and give insight on what The Fashion Group International has to offer for aspiring and established trend setters. The night was a success for the group with a great turn out and many themed looks to let fashionistas know Boston can rock “camp” with the best of them.
