Every year Boston Fashion Week pairs up with Downtown Boston BID for an outdoor event showing off the cities next stars in an initiative that provides a platform to fashion designers at every stage of their careers, including student fashion designers.

Open Runway is an open-air fashion show that takes place on the DTX Steps in Downtown Crossing. Using the same premise as an open mic night for singers and comedians, Open Runway provides an opportunity for local fashion designers to show their creations to the public.
The man behind the unique opportunity is Founder and Executive Director of Boston Fashion Week, Jay Calderin. He was host alongside a panel of industry leaders The Stylist Closet, Diana Jaye, and The Seyet. They gave expert critique and praise as they celebrated a diverse collection of unique designs and bold fashion statements created right here in the Greater Boston area.
The show opened with collections from established designers such as Joey Pino, Mark Painter, Love Cashionista, Caity Bug, h.e.r.fashion, Michaela’s Market, Headass Honcho, and Hannah Michelle Designs. Their collections showed pieces from butterfly wraps, distressed denims, a work suit for a lady in soft pastels, and crocheted skirts.
Following were fashions future and local aspiring designer as students from Lasell, Mass Art and SFD Boston. The set showed off men’s wear with bold colors and strategic pockets and belt, dark violets and ruffles for the gothic trend, stunning patchwork pieces.
One of the two best in show was Designer Zemfira Cholponbaeva with a breath taking tribute to her culture with piercing reds in full trench coats, flawless seems and classic patterns. Also, Designer Vluan Naulv who stole the show with two very extravagant dresses. One was a sheer white body suit with the most elegant over shawl flowing feet from the model, the other appeared to be a white mini dress until a small slip was made and unveiled a popping pink ankle length gown.
Closing out the runway was a dapper line from FNS. The showcase was a feature for the businessman with velvet trimmed jackets, oversized corduroy finding that chic respectable appeal. This event is always an eye grabber in the setting of Downtown Boston and lures with the fashion. It was in part of celebrating Boston Fashion Week 30th anniversary this October.
